Xiaomi devices to receive their final update with Android 15

New incoming software has put smartphone companies in a critical position, struggling to keep their devices updated with the emergence of new technology. Android 15 is the most awaited update in the mobile world of operating systems, which is right now in its final development stages. Although it hasn’t been officially released yet, Google is expected to launch Android 15 very soon. Top smartphone makers such as Xiaomi have already begun rolling out the new version to their devices the very moment it becomes available.

Xiaomi’s Update Challenge with Android 15

For Xiaomi, which has a wide gamut of Android-based smartphones on the market today, the big upcoming Android 15 update is a very special challenge: to get as many devices up and running on the latest version. The problem is, it could be pretty tough in itself.

The new features and enhancements that Android 15 brings, while desirable, also mean some devices will reach the end of their update cycle. For these models, the bare minimum will be Android 15 as the last major system update they can install.

Why Software Updates are Important

Software updates keep smartphones running smoothly and securely. Most new versions of Android come with a raft of new features, improved performance, and better security. This means, for the user, an update implies that their device remains functional and safe from probable dangers. However, when it stops receiving updates, the gadget becomes more exposed to security and may have to go without new app features.

Android 15 is quite a double-edged sword for Xiaomi users: many are eager to see the latest changes and additions, yet at the same time, some would also have to accept the fact that their smartphone will stop receiving updates beside the latest one. That’s particularly relevant for budget and mid-range users of Xiaomi devices-most receivers receive less than get for flagships.

Devices from Xiaomi likely to get their last update with Android 15

Xiaomi has not officially confirmed those devices which will not receive further updates beyond Android 15. Still, it is possible to indulge in some educated guesses based on knowledge of generally adopted update cycles for similar devices and previous policy adopted by the company.

Unlike some other brands, Xiaomi usually tends to avoid mentioning the exact time period of software support for its devices. However, typically, most budget and mid-range smartphones from Xiaomi get roughly two major Android updates during their lifetime.
Based on this pattern, the following Xiaomi devices would have their last major system update with Android 15:

Xiaomi Series

  • Xiaomi 12
  • Xiaomi 12S
  • Xiaomi 12 Pro
  • Xiaomi 12 Ultra
  • Xiaomi MIX FOLD 2
  • Xiaomi 12 Lite
  • Xiaomi 12T
  • Xiaomi 12T Pro
  • Xiaomi Civi 1S

Redmi Series

  • Redmi K50
  • Redmi K50 Pro
  • Redmi K50 Gaming
  • Redmi Note 12
  • Redmi Note 12 Pro
  • Redmi Note 12 Pro+
  • Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed Edition
  • Redmi 12
  • Redmi 12 5G

POCO Series

  • POCO F4 GT
  • POCO X5
  • POCO X5 Pro

Worth noting here is that the list above is not conclusive, and some models may still get updates beyond Android 15, such as those in the Xiaomi 12 series. However, for most of the aforementioned devices, Android 15 will likely be their last big update. Beyond that, it’s up to whatever security patches Xiaomi issues, but even those will dry up eventually.

What Happens When Updates Stop

When official updates for a smartphone stop, that doesn’t mean the device immediately becomes unusable. Most apps will run just fine, and users can go about their normal use of the device. Without these updates, specifically for security vulnerabilities, the risk greatly increases. As time goes on, those unpatched operating system vulnerabilities can be used by malware to compromise personal data.

If you are using a Xiaomi device that stops updates after Android 15, then you have the following options:

  • Continue with Caution: You may still use your phone, but you must be extremely cautious. Do not install applications from unreliable sources, and you should be extremely aware of phishing attempts and other online malware. You may want to consider using mobile security software for that added layer of protection.
  • Installation of Custom ROM: Actually, it is for the geeks. That is another extended lease on life for your device. Essentially, a custom ROM is basically an independent developer’s version of Android. These custom ROMs run newer versions of Android along with security updates; they do require some technical know-how to be installed. Remember that using custom ROMs could void your warranty altogether and may interfere with compatibility for some apps and services.
  • Switch to a New Device: If it starts getting old, perhaps now would be a good time to upgrade to a new phone. Of course, with a new device, that means updated hardware and software, and for sure, it is guaranteed to have updates for one or two more years. As for Xiaomi’s lineup right now, it includes models that will receive future Android versions, too, like Android 16, so those devices will last longer.

What’s Coming Next for Xiaomi Updates?

The closer it gets to the official release of Android 15, the more relevant it is for Xiaomi users to know the update schedule the devices have taken. Given that the company does not publish an official list among its devices that stop receiving updates, based on the habits it developed in the past, one can make some guesses. The same goes when considering the age of the device itself. It would, therefore, mean that the time for support of a device is almost at an end and also benefits weighed against the probable security risks.

Whether you continue using with care, try a custom ROM, or upgrade to another device, options exist for navigating this transition provided Android 15 becomes the standard. The Xiaomi users should be proactive in keeping themselves updated so that they can get the best out of their respective devices to stay secure and updated with the very latest advancements of the software.
