Xiaomi’s Ambition Stirs Up China’s Home Appliance Giants

In an interview published on May 19, 2025Chairman Fang Hongbo of Midea shed light on increasing competition from Xiaomi and traditional home appliance giants. Last year, Xiaomi President Lu Weibing came to Midea and laid out an aggressive plan: Xiaomi is targeting to achieve No.1 in smartphone sales globally within 3 years, reach No. 5 in auto sales globally within 10 years, and enter No. 3 in China’s big appliance space in 3 years’ time. This aggressive growth plan caught the eye of industry giants such as Midea, Gree, and Haier.

Fang Hongbo conceded that Xiaomi is being kept under close watch, and Midea even carried out three deep internal research reports, more than 100,000 words in length, on Xiaomi’s tactics. Xiaomi’s disruption is “a wake-up call for a previously complacent industry,” he said in praise, their entry being “a good thing for home appliances.”

Xiaomi’s Expansion into Appliance, Automotive, and Beyond

Xiaomi’s multi-front expansion entails:

  • Air Conditioners and Washing Machines – Direct competitors with Midea and major giants.
  • Smartphones – Currently leading worldwide and targeting No.1 ranked.
  • Automotive sector – Target to be among global top 5 in 10 years with its new Xiaomi EVs.

As Xiaomi expands, Midea has decided to dispose of its financial stake in Xiaomi. The firm disposed of almost ¥2 billion (\$276 million USD) in Xiaomi stocks by 2024 year end. Xiaomi shares were held by Midea for almost a decade, but an official confirmed that the disposal was an ordinary “normal operation” and denied any strategic implications.

Midea Rejects Entering Auto Industry

In spite of being offered multiple proposals by automaker companies, Fang Hongbo upheld that Midea is staying out of the EV industry. After internal debate, he stated, “We don’t have the capability to do that.” Xiaomi’s car prospects, on the other hand, are full steam ahead, tied closely into its HyperConnect platform to provide intelligent driving experiences.
