Xiaomi will get anti-theft identity check feature with Android 16

Google boosts Android security with widespread deployment of “Identity Check” anti-theft functionality in the Android 16 update. Introduced with Pixel Feature Drop in December 2024, this robust security feature started out as a Pixel device-exclusive. Samsung also quickly adopted this feature, bringing it to One UI 7 based upon Android 15. Android smartphone users from other manufacturers, such as Xiaomi, will soon also enjoy this high-end security layer through Android 16’s update. How does Identity Check work?

The crux of Identity Check is to secure important system configurations and sensitive information such as stored passwords. When changing security settings or accessing password records, the device will request biometric authentication only — for instance, fingerprint or face recognition.

In contrast to standard security prompts, this system does not support fallback to PIN or password, which means unauthorized intruders cannot skip through biometric authentication if they physically obtain access to a phone.

Why It Matters to Xiaomi & Other Companies

As Identity Check involves rewriting part of the Android biometric system, this cannot be done through app updates. It will need to be included in a system-level Android update – which is why we see it included with Android 16. Xiaomi would be likely to incorporate this within its HyperOS platform as soon as Android 16 support starts, enhancing overall protection for all of its users.

When will Xiaomi phones catch up?
