Xiaomi Vela system to open source soon, launches pioneer experience program

In the end of 2023 and during the Xiaomi IoT Ecosystem Partner Conference some public announcements were made that Xiaomi will open-source the Vela system under the open source protocol Apache 2.0. Now, Xiaomi has moved one step further: they kicked off the Vela Open Source Pioneer Experience Program to provide early access for developers.

What is Xiaomi Vela?

Xiaomi Vela is an IoT embedded software platform, independently developed by Xiaomi. It is based on open-source real-time operating systems such as NuttX and has the characteristics of super high adaptability and compatibility with a wide range of hardware devices. There is 8KB least memory usage but no limit on CPU frequency in Vela. It can support various SoC multi-core architectures, and a flexible deployment across different product types is allowed. Important Features of Xiaomi Vela:

  • Minimal system requirements: Needs only 8KB of memory.
  • No CPU frequency limit: Can collaborate with any sort of SoC multi-core architecture.
  • Broad compatibility: Supports deployment across a wide range of hardware specifications.

Xiaomi Vela’s Roadmap and Future Plans

Over the past three years, the implementation of Xiaomi Vela has been across more than 1,000 SKUs on smart home and wearables. The flexibility of the system makes it very suitable to run a wide variety of IoT devices. Additionally, in the future, Xiaomi is going to integrate more Vela with the Android system and will be trying to provide users with an even better experience when combined with smartphones and smartwatches.

Xiaomi also announced that more than 10 million lines of Vela code will be open-sourced. The company has completed a comprehensive compliance review and optimization of the unboxing experience. The main open-source repository for Xiaomi Vela will be found on GitHub, with a backup location on Gitee. Regarding developers and enthusiasts, Xiaomi will also maintain an official Bilibili account where it will post updates and resources.
