Xiaomi Vela powers over 140 million devices in the global AIoT ecosystem

Xiaomi has officially announced that its Vela system, an IoT embedded software platform, has now been integrated into over 140 million devices worldwide. The announcement came during the first Global Developer Conference of OpenVela, held recently in Costa Rica. Built upon the open-source NuttX real-time operating system, Xiaomi Vela is designed for devices across a wide range of hardware—from smartwatches to home appliances—providing seamless and lightweight connectivity for the expanding AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) ecosystem.

What Is Xiaomi Vela?

Xiaomi Vela is a very adaptable IoT embedded software system by Xiaomi. It depends on the open-source NuttX kernel, which is both scalable and resource-light. With only 8KB of memory, Vela is supported across multiple SoC architectures, enabling it to power anything from wearables and smart sensors to sophisticated industrial controllers.

Ever since its open-source release in 2024 as OpenVela by Xiaomi, it has become a corner stone of its HyperConnect ecosystem to facilitate deep integration between Xiaomi and third-party smart products.

Close Alignment with the NuttX Community

At the conference, Gregory Nutt, NuttX founder, gave a keynote presentation entitled “NuttX and OpenVela Join Forces to Establish an Open AIoT Ecosystem.” He thanked Xiaomi for their contributions, saying that OpenVela’s adoption of NuttX was a “win-win for both communities” and enriched both platforms at the same time.

Xiaomi has been a positive influence on NuttX since 2017, and over 50% of community code contributions were contributed by Xiaomi developers for three consecutive years. The organization also focused on making NuttX an Apache Top-Level Project in 2022.

Universal Adoption and Explosive Expansion

According to Du Chao, Head of OpenVela Open Source, the ecosystem has undergone universal adoption and explosive expansion:

  • Installed on almost 100 types of devices
  • Thousands of Xiaomi and partner brands’ products
  • Over 140 million units’ cumulative installations

Additionally, over 70 chip makers, service providers, and equipment makers are part of the OpenVela ecosystem. Currently, 354 chip platforms and development boards are supported, which makes OpenVela one of the most active IoT open-source ecosystems in the world.

Building the Future of Smart Connectivity

The success of Xiaomi Vela system speaks volumes of the company’s leadership in open-source AIoT innovation. With the adoption of light architecture, international developer collaboration, and multi-industry collaboration, Xiaomi continues to advocate a smarter, more connected ecosystem under its HyperConnect vision.
