Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has announced that the company’s proprietary 2200MPa Super Strong Steel has secured the “First Prize of Scientific and Technological Innovation Achievements” from the China Association for the Promotion of Industry-University-Research Cooperation. This award is the highest honor for collaborative innovation in China, highlighting Xiaomi’s leap in automotive material science.
What is 2200MPa Super Strong Steel?
Developed in partnership with Northeastern University and Yucaitang, this 2200MPa material is currently the highest-strength steel used in mass-produced vehicles. It significantly outperforms the industry-standard 1500MPa hot-stamped steel:
-
Tensile & Yield Strength: Increases of 40% and 24% respectively.
-
Embedded Roll Cage: Applied to the A/B pillars of the Xiaomi SU7, increasing A-pillar bearing capacity by 35% and B-pillar capacity by 70.5%.
-
Anti-Collision Beams: Front and rear door beams see strength increases of 52.4% and 37.6%.
Lei Jun clarified that this is a fully proprietary Xiaomi Auto invention, ensuring the Xiaomi HyperConnect ecosystem is supported by world-class physical safety.
Market Impact and Safety Evolution
The 2200MPa steel effectively creates an “embedded roll cage,” drastically improving vehicle integrity during side collisions and rollovers. By utilizing higher-strength materials, Xiaomi enhances safety without adding excessive weight, preserving the battery efficiency and performance of their EVs.
Xiaomi’s Strategy
This achievement underscores Xiaomi’s commitment to internal R&D, moving beyond “supplier-only” tech. By mastering foundational materials, Xiaomi ensures its “Human x Car x Home” vision is built on industry-leading hardware.
