Xiaomi shuts down beta update program after 14 years

Global technology and innovation leader Xiaomi has announced one of the most radical changes in its approach toward software development and user engagement. With Xiaomi all set to transit from HyperOS 1.0 to HyperOS 2.0, testing through public beta updates will soon come to an end for the company. This could be one such strategic change adopted by Xiaomi, hinting at a broader industry trend toward more controlled and stable software releases.

It’s the end of an era for Xiaomi’s current beta program.

For over ten years, Xiaomi has tried to engage its user base nearly on a daily basis through beta updates using its MIUI interface, building an active community of testers and developers. Two years ago, the company started curbing these beta releases to only a few users and devices with updates coming in every week.

Now, while HyperOS 1.0 is coming to a close and HyperOS 2.0 is in the pipeline, Xiaomi has announced that beta updates would no longer be made available to the general public.

Transition into Internal Testing

This will bring an end to Xiaomi’s 14-year-long public beta journey starting from 2024. In the future, only internal Xiaomi employees will be using the betas for testing. This change reflects Xiaomi’s interest in making the software more stable and reliable by only keeping the preliminary testing within a more controlled environment.

Development Release Final

OS 1.0.24.7.28.DEV Xiaomi has published what would be the last public beta version, OS1.0.24.7.28.DEV. By now, downloads are available for a large number of devices, including:

  • Xiaomi 12S Ultra, Xiaomi 12S Pro, Xiaomi 12S, Xiaomi 12 Pro, Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro Dimensity
  • Redmi K50 Ultra, Redmi K50 Gaming Edition, Redmi K50 Pro, Redmi K50
  • Xiaomi Pad 5 Pro

This update, which is going to be pushed out before midnight tonight to our users for an upgrade, shows them the latest enhancements.

Key Update Notes

  1. Improved System Stability and Fluency: The update focuses on boosting system stability and optimizing fluency, ensuring users have a smoother experience.
  2. Changeover Guidance: Those who read in posts claiming to update from the development to the official version and are receiving “update package verification failed”, should suspend updating immediately and wait for the official version’s security patch to surpass that of the development version.
  3. New Beta Version Mode: Given today’s industry trends and in an attempt to upgrade the user experience, Xiaomi decides to name the “Beta version” mode as so—this had been the name given for this new version of the system that is solely for the early internal testers. This would, at some point later, give Xuân the avenue to two independent versions of Xiaomi HyperOS—the internal “Beta version” and the “official version” for all users.

It is an event that attests to Xiaomi’s commitment towards provision of quality, stable software updates to its users. At the same time, by internalizing beta testing and further streamlining the update process, Xiaomi is setting a new benchmark for software development best practices,. The company is thus showing its gratitude to all developers and Mi fans who have supported and engaged with their beta programs throughout these years. As Xiaomi turns a new leaf with HyperOS 2.0, rigorous internal testing will end up offering software that is ever more resilient and reliable for the global user base.

very bad move by xiaomi, the beta version was often better than the stable version and the correction arrived quickly if there was a mistake. This way, on the global stable version, you have to wait for months for corrections and in the end only the security update arrives.

Lol, they not only abandoned Beta programs, but whole SW support too.
“Premium” 700€ devices get ZERO QOL updates in half a year within launch. All they do is remove crucial features in older phones (losing dolby atmos presets), and ignore any feedback from users (still waiting for reply, to the feedback I posted 2 years ago, let alone this month).
Don’t buy Xiaomi, they have been overtaken by greed…
They don’t make nor budget, nor quality products anymore and you’re much better off elsewhere.
