Xiaomi removes HyperOS animations from phones over 2 years old

Xiaomi officially announced that the “advanced material” feature on its Xiaomi HyperOS will not be joining the Xiaomi 12 series. This follows months of heavy testing that shows this feature tremendously affects battery life and system fluency.

Detailed Findings Lead to Feature Removal

The “advanced material” function, a key aesthetic addition in the Xiaomi HyperOS, was slated to strengthen system animation and visual effects changes around the OS. It provides effects such as real-time blur, a rendering technique that improves the aesthetics of different system elements, including the control center and background. But, as of now, Xiaomi has said that its switching on brought more than 10% of the battery life decrease for the Xiaomi 12 series phones.

Furthermore, the fluency while performing basic functions, such as pulling down the notification bar, dragged sufficiently by over 10%, even following rounds of optimization testing. With these performance drawbacks, Xiaomi concluded that the feature did not meet the basic standards of being smooth and efficient enough to warrant integration into a flagship series stand like the Xiaomi 12.

Technical Challenges and User Experience Prioritized

From this decision, it underlines further the commitment Xiaomi as a company stands to make, maintaining the balance between design and features enabled. While the “advanced material” feature allows the interface to be much more sophisticated and immersive, negative impacts on such basics as battery life and responsiveness may well detract from the many usability features of the phone.

This is a reminder of the challenges rocking smartphone manufacturers trying to integrate very sophisticated software features without compromising the essential performance metrics that users so much value, like battery endurance and smooth operation.

“Advanced Material” will be removed on these devices

  • Snapdragon 888
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
  • Snapdragon 7 and below
  • Dimensity 8000+ and below

“Advanced Material” will be supported on these devices

  • Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and above
  • Dimensity 9200+ and above
  • On tablets, Xiaomi Pad 6 Max only.

How Can This Impact Xiaomi’s Software Strategy

The “advanced material” feature’s removal from the Xiaomi 12 series could potentially lead Xiaomi to reconsider its software optimization strategies, going forward with other devices and updates. Most importantly, it will be up to ensuring that any changes to the user interface don’t come at the expense of the basic performance, especially as expectations of flagship devices keep rising.

However, it is unbecoming of Xiaomi that these devices using Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 have performance problems in 2 animations. However, we think that developers will overcome this somehow and provide use to everyone.

This eye-pleasing feature could be missed by users of the Xiaomi 12 series, while the pursuit of long-wished-for battery life and fluency beheld by Xiaomi will still be commendable. Xiaomi will be doing more tweaking to HyperOS with its undertone purpose of finding a perfect equilibrium between new creative features and a stable and efficient user experience.

Xiaomi’s move actually echoes a larger trend in the smart device industry: the increasingly serious examination of what impact new features have on the performance of the entire device. In this Age of Demand, the ability to deliver advanced functionality while still maintaining robust performance is the key to satisfying the needs of the modern consumer.

Yeah, I think older devices would support the animations just fine. This is the Xiaomi way to say, f..k you buy a new phone after 2 years. Let’s spend some more money and fill the planet with electronic waste who cares. Never again Xiaomi, I will buy an Galaxy or iPhone next, I hope EU blocks them from selling phones in the EU.

it annoys me how real time blur isn’t available on a brand new m6 pro 4g, Xiaomi should keep the option there and give us the option to turn it on or off, you buy one of their phones and they still act like they own it, I myself I’m willing to sacrifice some battery life for real time blur but no I don’t get a say on this matter

As a zeus user having advanced textures turned on doesn’t effect the battery life or causes overheating issues. I don’t know why they’re deciding to get rid of it even though there is a warning pop up for it.

    They should keep it!

I have this feature on Xiaomi 13 Pro and it’s a huge battery drainer so no one is losing out on it by having it cut beforehand by Xiaomi. I think Xiaomi should just improvise the battery drain issues with this feature on or just get rid of it entirely
