Xiaomi registered six new “U-Family” trademarks

Recently, Xiaomi Technology Co., Ltd. has filed applications for six new trademarks that are believed to disclose the naming convention for its future vehicle lineup: per records from China’s State Intellectual Property Office Trademark Network, the technology giant submitted applications for “XIAOMI FU”, “XIAOMI WU”, “XIAOMI OU”, “XIAOMI MU”, “XIAOMI GU”, and “XIAOMI RU” in late December 2024.

Many believe that the trademarks filed under the category of transportation tools are designed to be part of Xiaomi’s burgeoning automotive business. The move was the latest from Xiaomi as the company gains further traction in the electric vehicle sector, succeeding in the initial sales of the SU7-sedan last year.

Connection to Current Lineup

In all, the recent trademark filings are apparently indicating that Xiaomi names other existing or even teased cars similar to the new set: SU7 sedans were available on sale from the very outset, with a YU7 SUV supposedly coming into market circles around the June-July 2025 timeline.

The YU7, since its official introduction on December 9, 2024, has been widely discussed. Concerning the naming convention of the gadget, Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s founder, chairman and CEO, previously told the public: “Many people asked how to pronounce YU7? Just read it as YU-7. When it is released, we will explain in detail why it is named this way.”

Looking Ahead

These could be indicative of strategic planning at Xiaomi for a wider vehicle lineup with these new “U-family” trademark applications. The consistent naming pattern may indicate that the company is developing a coherent branding strategy for different vehicle categories or models within its automotive division. The applications are pending substantive examination by Chinese trademark authorities. With Xiaomi continuing to push into the automotive sector, these filings offer an interesting look at possibly how the company might name future products.
