Xiaomi may skip HyperOS 3 for HyperOS 26

Apple’s revolutionary decision to abandon iOS 19 in favor of iOS 26 has sent shockwaves through the tech industry, with many wondering if other manufacturers will follow suit. Apple is introducing a year-based naming scheme where software versions reflect the calendar year they’ll primarily be used in, making iOS 26 the next major update despite currently being on iOS 18. This bold move raises an intriguing question: could Xiaomi adopt a similar strategy and jump from HyperOS 2 directly to HyperOS 26? While HyperOS 3 development is currently underway with an expected October 2025 release, the tech giant might consider aligning with Apple’s innovative naming convention.

Apple’s Bold Naming Revolution

Apple’s shift to year-based naming means iOS 26 will be previewed in June 2025 and released in September 2025, representing the year users will primarily experience the software. This strategic change eliminates confusion around version numbering and creates a more intuitive system for consumers to understand software lifecycles.

Current HyperOS 3 Development Status

HyperOS 3 is anticipated to roll out in October 2025, following Xiaomi’s customary release calendar that aligns with their annual flagship phone launches. The upcoming version will be built on Android 16 and promises significant improvements across Xiaomi’s ecosystem of devices including smartphones, tablets, and IoT products.

Why Xiaomi Might Consider Year-Based Naming

Several compelling reasons could drive Xiaomi to adopt Apple’s year-based approach:

  • Market alignment with industry leader Apple’s naming strategy
  • Consumer clarity regarding software relevance and timeline
  • Global standardization across different markets and regions
  • Future-proofing the naming convention for long-term sustainability

Potential Challenges and Considerations

While the concept is intriguing, Xiaomi faces unique challenges in implementing such a dramatic naming change. The company’s established development cycle and existing roadmap for HyperOS 3 would require significant adjustments to accommodate a year-based system.

Xiaomi has been making similar user interfaces for years, so don’t get your hopes up for future updates—nothing changes for the global version anyway.
