Xiaomi Intelligent Chassis: Unveils dancing, on-spot turn, and compass navigation

Recently, Xiaomi Motors introduced their newest intelligence reinforcements to chassis technology, adding forthcoming support for Full Autonomous Driving.

The pre-research technology contains four key innovations:

  1. Xiaomi Fully Active Suspension
  2. Xiaomi Super Quad Motor System
  3. Wire Control of Xiaomi48V
  4. Xiaomi 48V Wire Steering

Key Features of Xiaomi’s Intelligent Chassis Technology

First of all, the intelligent bottom chassis boasts many firsts of Xiaomi to enhance mobility, control, and adaptability. For instance, turning on a spot, “dancing,” or turning like a compass does-all this has been demonstrated in the recent demo video. The ultimate goal here is natively supporting fully autonomous driving.

Fully Active Suspension

Xiaomi’s fully active suspension is fitted with a 4.6kW power source for each wheel, which can adjust up to 140mm with a peak lifting force of 44,400 N. Besides, this is further enhanced with dual-valve damping, variable damping control, and remote operation within the Xiaomi ecosystem-even the “dance” functions on demand via a mobile app.

Super Quad Motor System

The new Super Quad Motor System equips two self-developed motors and two V8s motors, boasting a maximum of 2054PS combined horsepower. The front motor goes up to 28,000 rpm; each reaches up to 449PS with a peak torque of 380N·m. It enables totally new movements, such as U-turns that now can be adjusted by speed, if not consecutive multiple U-turns, making the vehicle more agile.

48V Wire Control System

Underpinned by rich experience in providing smart hardware, Xiaomi’s intelligent chassis has further evolved into a 48V system solution from a traditional 12V system, matching a series of high-power devices. Replacing hydraulic components and brake fluid, the 48V brake-by-wire system would then be replaced with electric calipers, increasing the response speed by 40% and enhancing driving range by over 10 km.

48V Steer-by-Wire Technology

Thanks to Xiaomi’s steer-by-wire technology, the bridge between the steering wheel and wheels is wholly electronic; the system can be controlled by software. In fact, this system features a variable steering ratio of 5:1-15:1 and in the future could offer a no-steering cockpit layout.

Xiaomi’s Vision for Autonomous Driving

These chassis innovations will be perfectly positioned to integrate with an autonomous driving system, one step closer to our fully autonomous vehicles of the future,” Lei Jun said, the CEO of Xiaomi. The invention showcases its ambitious plans that Xiaomi is making to change the definition of automotive technology and set new yardsticks in the industry.
