Behind the name change, its motive was to have a unified OS for all its devices, under one HyperConnect ecosystem. Underneath, however, Xiaomi kept MIUI’s numbering convention—meaning that HyperOS 3 is actually MIUI 17.
The MIUI Legacy Behind HyperOS
Although Xiaomi discontinued publicly using the name MIUI, its in-house development path continues to utilize the traditional MIUI version numbering scheme. Examples include:
- HyperOS 1 began life in MIUI 15 – Earlier testing releases have referenced that version.
- HyperOS 2 is similar to MIUI 16 – Version numbering in system programs began with 16 in in-house updates in Xiaomi.
- HyperOS 3 will be MIUI 17 – The new update of HyperOS keeps with this same theme, with even Xiaomi system codes having references to MIUI 17
How Do We Know That HyperOS 3 Equals MIUI 17
One of such significant cues comes in form of Xiaomi’s system apps. As Xiaomi releases an update for its OS to a new version, its version of system apps (like the Phone and Messages app) corresponds to its corresponding MIUI version.
- For HyperOS 1, system app versions began at 15.
- In HyperOS 2, system programs upgraded to version 16.
- HyperOS 3 apps will have begun rolling out with version 17—confirming its MIUI 17 heritage.
Additionally, some of Xiaomi firmware codes have specifically referenced MIUI 17, proving yet again that MIUI’s lineage continues to live in HyperOS.
Why Xiaomi Persisted with MIUI Numbering
Xiaomi may have discontinued its use of the MIUI branding in public, but its MIUI versioning system is still an integral part of in-house software development. It helps maintain software update continuity, app compatibility, and UI development. As much as Xiaomi wants to present HyperOS as a new, state-of-the-art operating system, the technical underpinnings of MIUI are an integral part of HyperOS’s development pipeline.
Final Thoughts: The Legacy of MIUI
Although MIUI no longer lives under that name, its development continues under HyperOS. For long-time Xiaomi enthusiasts, having information about this in-house numbering scheme is important information regarding Xiaomi’s software path. HyperOS 3 isn’t actually titled MIUI 17, but in development at Xiaomi, it most surely is. With HyperOS 3 (MIUI 17) in consideration, Xiaomi will introduce its new-generation software with added optimizations, heightened AI integration, and deeper device connectivity—all with its MIUI heritage in consideration

Unfortunately, after updating the system to Hyper OS 2, the device no longer works as required. The system is very bad. The screen has become slow and its response is weak, in addition to the screen ghosting and tearing, I think it’s time to change from Xiaomi devices and move to devices that care about the customer experience. after my update phone was working properly but within 1 month without any change on phone fingerprint isn’t working properly, takes too long to open and when i feel fingerprint didn’t work and i press power button then it opens and locks screen, so hyperos 2 was supposed to be faster than miui but make to feel it’s slower actually.

Confermo, dopo aver installato la versione Hiper OS 2.0 il mio xiaomi 13 T Pro è diventato instabile, scalda moltissimo, la risposta dello schermo è molto lenta insomma penso, (anzi, ne sono convinto) che dalla versione precedente, a questa, ci sia stato un peggioramento, non un miglioramento, speriamo nel prossimo, altrimenti, prenderò in considerazione l’idea di cambiare marchio…

i hope they fix the smoothness of touching the apps and the graphics of some games and bring back the others features like playing youtube and you can turn off the screen and the hyperos 2.0.2 they removed the automatic suggestions of rotation on screen..i hove you fix this event using redmi phone for 6 to 7 years until i upgrade of some phone of redmi the features i wan to see is not there i hope to bring it back…thank you
