Xiaomi grabs Q1 2025 Chinese smartphone shipping top spot

As reported by IDC’s data that was released on April 16, 2025, China’s smartphone space saw an impressive rebound during Q1 of this year with overall shipments growing by 3.3% year-on-year. The highlight of the quarter was Xiaomi‘s performance, which shipped 13.3 million units with 39.9% year-on-year growth. Not only did this make Xiaomi the number one brand in shipment volume but also the highest-growing among all vendors in China.

To put this in perspective, smartphone shipments globally only increased by 1.5% over the same quarter. This is an indication of how Xiaomi’s recent initiatives, such as promoting with HyperOS updates, how well the Redmi Note 14 series is faring, as well as its optimum pricing, are yielding huge dividends in its domestic market.

Shipment Breakdown

After the success of Xiaomi, other brands in China performed as follows:

Huawei: 12.9 million units shipped (+10.0%)
OPPO: 11.2 million units shipped (+3.3)
vivo: Shipped 10.3 million units (+2)
Apple: 9.8 million units shipped (-9.0%)

Xiaomi’s dominance is obvious, not only in terms of numbers but also in growth rate. Apple, however, remained the sole brand among the top five to have declined.

Global Perspective: Xiaomi also Stands Out Globally

Globally, Xiaomi continues to impress. In Q1 2025, it shipped 41.8 million units, giving it a 13.7% market share, trailing only behind Samsung (60.6M units, 19.9%) and Apple (57.9M units, 19.0%). OPPO and vivo followed with 23.5M (7.7%) and 22.7M (7.4%) units respectively.

Chinese market expansion is also thought to be fueled by government subsidies started in January that included smartphone products and contributed to spurring local demand.
