Xiaomi gains ground in a competitive Q2 China smartphone market

The latest CounterPoint report paints a clear picture: China’s smartphone sector remains fiercely competitive, even as the overall market dipped 2% year-over-year in Q2. Xiaomi, however, continues to stand out. The company captured a robust 16% market share—matching OPPO—on the strength of popular models like the Xiaomi 14 series and the growing appeal of its HyperOS ecosystem.

Market Leaders and Shifting Dynamics

At the top, Huawei and Vivo are currently tied as co-leaders, each holding an 18% share. Huawei’s performance was buoyed by strong demand for the Nova 14 series.

Trailing just behind, Xiaomi and OPPO (including OnePlus) are locked in a close contest, each with 16% market share. This competitive landscape underscores just how fast consumer preferences can shift in the Chinese market.

Xiaomi’s Strategic Execution

Xiaomi’s results deserve attention: the company increased its shipments by 4% year-over-year, outperforming broader market trends. This growth is largely attributed to the company’s well-timed subsidy strategy, which allowed Xiaomi to anticipate and satisfy market demand. The report also notes a slight increase in Apple’s shipments, mainly driven by aggressive price reductions on the iPhone 16 series.
