Xiaomi AI Speaker stops receiving functional updates after 8 years

Xiaomi has officially declared that its 2017 Xiaomi AI Speaker of the first generation is no longer going to receive functional updates. The legendary smart speaker, the original one that is run on Xiaomi’s virtual assistant Xiao Ai, has had a nearly eight-year run with users. From now on, it is going to get security updates only. The announcement has been made by a confirmed HyperOS Home / Speaker Circle Leader on Weibo. This is applicable to a number of other Xiaomi and Redmi smart speaker variants as well.

If you’re still using these devices, don’t fret—they’re not going dark. Xiaomi has confirmed that they’ll continue to get the necessary security updates, but there won’t be any new features added. Users still get to control them using HyperConnect and integrate smart home capabilities with ease.

Devices Impacted by Update Changes

The below Xiaomi and Redmi speaker models will also no longer receive functional updates but transition to security-only support:

  • Xiaomi AI Speaker 2017
  • Xiao Ai Speaker Mini (March 27, 2018 – May 13, 2025 Xiaomi Xiao Ai Speaker Play (2019) (June 18, 2019 – May 13, 2025)
  • Redmi Xiao Ai Speaker Play (December 10, 2019 – May 13, 2025)
  • Xiao Ai Speaker Universal Remote Control Edition (12 June 2019 – 13 May 2025)
  • Xiao Ai Speaker HD (January 8, 2019 – January 18, 2024

These speakers will continue functioning as per normal but won’t receive new features with updates.

The original Xiaomi AI Speaker had:

  • rectangular column with gracefully curved form
  • 360° sound field for all-around immersive sound from any direction
  • 16-million-color LED ring for ambient lighting
  • Far-field voice control with 6 built-in digital microphones
  • Smart home automation using Xiaomi HyperConnect

Though the functional updates ceased, these models continue to be good picks for users with straightforward smart needs.
