Xiaomi develops Xiaomi 18 at breakneck speed, but Pro model may stay China-exclusive

The Xiaomi 18 series is being developed at breakneck speed with the code name “madrid“. Although the initial leaks centered on the camera components, recent reports are giving insight into the “Magic Back Screen” and the complicated regional plan that Xiaomi is planning for late 2026.

I have been tracking the source code of the Xiaomi HyperOS, and although the basic version of the Xiaomi 18, also known as the Q3, has all the makings of a Global version, the picture for the Pro version is complicated. This could mean that enthusiasts may get a more powerful basic version, but the most innovative things may only be available in a particular region.

TL;DR

  • Pro Exclusive: The secondary AI-powered back screen is currently rumored only for the Xiaomi 18 Pro, with no leaks yet for the standard model.
  • Global Uncertainty: Historically, Xiaomi has kept its “Pro” models China-exclusive, and early 2026 data suggests the Xiaomi 18 Pro might follow this trend.
  • Standard Upgrades: The base Xiaomi 18 will still benefit from a periscope telephoto lens and 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor across all regions.
  • Software Integration: The new back screen is expected to be more than a gimmick, featuring deep AI integration for cross-device controls.

Will the “Magic Back Screen” Remain Exclusively for the Pro?

Another big question surrounding the Xiaomi 18 series is which models will be getting the secondary screen display. All the reputable leaks on Weibo indicate that only the Xiaomi 18 Pro will be getting the evolution on the back design.

However, I have not seen any signs yet of this hardware being implemented in the standard Xiaomi 18. The rear screen appears to be used by Xiaomi as an important “Pro-tier” distinguishing factor, particularly given their data that indicated 80% of last generation models sold were those with rear screens.

The Global Dilemma: Will the Pro Model Leave China?

There is an increasing belief that the Xiaomi 18 Pro may never hit the international store shelves. This is because the company usually skips the “Pro” version of the phone in its international rollout. This is in addition to the regular model and the “Ultra” version of the phone.

We are witnessing a trend in today’s Xiaomi 17 series as well, where the Pro and Pro Max are still exclusive to China. Going by that, international fans may have to pick between the smaller Xiaomi 18 and the giant Xiaomi 18 Ultra, possibly sacrificing the unique AI back screen found on the Pro variant.

AI Evolution: It’s More Than a Selfie Mirror

If the Xiaomi 18 Pro does come with the “AI-powered real display,” it will not be limited to notifications alone. The idea is to use the back of the phone as a functional secondary screen, which will pair with the Xiaomi HyperOS to show dynamic wallpapers, flight tracking, and even app widgets.

What’s Next for the “Madrid” Project?

While the basic Xiaomi 18 will surely go global with its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip, it’s still the Pro version of these phones that’s known to be the “innovator’s choice.” More information regarding global model variants should become clearer when these phones become part of regulatory databases like NBTC and EEC. The information regarding its availability is subject to change based on early leaks and Xiaomi’s global strategy regarding high-end features such as “Pro” models outside China.
