Today, Wang Hua, General Manager of Xiaomi Group’s Public Relations Department, explained a recent controversy: “the false comments on the company’s internal management software.” Wang explained that some staff, pretending to be Wang Xiaoyan (Vice President of Xiaomi Group and President of China), changed avatars and nicknames and posted comments in the community of Retailtong App. Afterwards, the company has corrected it and promised to handle it according to the internal regulations.
What Happened?
In the last two days, media attention turned to alleged comments made by Wang Xiaoyan in Xiaomi’s internal management platform, the Retailtong App, which is mainly used for communication among offline store employees. Through investigation, Xiaomi found that the comments were not authored by Wang Xiaoyan but were instead fabricated by employees impersonating her.
Retailtong App and Its Purpose
Wang Hua elaborated that the Retailtong App was a community platform targeted at enabling employees in each offline store to communicate with each other, exchange experience and knowledge, and have some interactions; but because of lacking a real-name authentication system, there appeared to be loopholes of its freedom to modify profiles and even resulted in this impersonation accident.
Corrective Actions of Xiaomi
- Full Real-Name System Implementation: To keep impersonation and misinformation at bay, a strict real-name policy has been introduced by Xiaomi for the Retailtong App.
- Accountability by Employees: The employees involved in the issue have confessed and admitted their misbehavior. Xiaomi said actions that run counter to the core values of the company will be handled in accordance with its internal rules.
Wang Hua suggested that since it was an internal thing, it wasn’t a public scandal. Then he assured all the stakeholders that the company was still supporting transparency and a good working environment. This swift response serves to show Xiaomi’s commitment to its values while ensuring a safe and reliable internal communication environment.
