Unlocking bootloader on some Xiaomi devices becomes impossible

Recently, Xiaomi updated the conditions of bootloader unlocking that will come into effect from January 1st, 2025. This new requirement lays down stricter measures on users to join the general industry trend of raising the bar to ensure higher levels of security and reducing risks from unlocking.

Key Updates to Bootloader Unlocking Rules

  1. Same-Device Requirement All activities pertaining to unlocking, like registration, application, binding, answering questions, and using the unlocked device, shall be operated on the same device. The move aims to prevent any misuse or unauthorized attempts to unlock devices.
  2. 14-Day Limit for Unlocking Binding and unlocking should be done by users within 336 hours (14 days) after the qualification of unlocking; otherwise, it shall be regarded as an abandonment of the permission, and re-application is required.
  3. Decreased Limit for Unlocking Starting from 2025, only one bound device per account can be unlocked within the validity period of the user’s unlocking permission, whereas previously Xiaomi allowed up to three.

Reasons Behind the Stricter Rules

These changes indicate the growing concerns about the security risks of unlocked devices. As custom ROM flashing became less popular and the need to keep user data secure started to gain momentum, major manufacturers like Xiaomi began to put tighter controls in place. From being known for openness in terms of bootloader unlocking, Xiaomi has finally moved to toe the line in minimizing vulnerabilities.

Implications for Users

  • Poor Flexibility to Enthusiasts: Well, flashing and modifying Xiaomi devices is going to get a bit more complicated now, particularly for users who have gotten into the habit of doing so with multiple devices.
  • Heightened Security: The new regulations are targeted at protecting user data and other malicious activities related to unauthorized unlocking.
  • Decline of the Flashing Market: With conditions getting even more strict by manufacturers, the custom ROM and mods market that once flourished may further decline.

With new policies regarding bootloader unlocking, Xiaomi managed to balance its approach between offering the user freedom for customization and enforcing added measures of security. While this may be sad news for all the flashing enthusiasts, this is the broader direction taken in the industry: one where devices need protection against unofficial modifications.
