Samsung abandons 20,000mAh battery project for safety reasons

The mobile technology revolution is ongoing, and the advancements in batteries are quite integral to this revolution. It has been reported that Samsung SDI has reshuffled its entire timeline. It has halted the development of its 20,000mAh Si-C battery to concentrate on those with 6,000mAh to 8,000mAh storage capacity instead. These batteries will offer improved efficiency and reliability. As we discuss in our Xiaomi updates and latest updates, battery life is a key concern among consumers worldwide.

The Disadvantages of Silicon-Carbon Technology

Silicon-carbon batteries are the revolutionary step ahead of what is to come in terms of smartphone batteries. Since traditional graphite does not have the capacity to hold as many lithium ions as the new material does, this new development is just the answer that is needed to make sure that the battery life of smartphones isn’t limited. It is not uncommon to see tech giants like Samsung investing heavily in this new development.

High Capacity Development Challenges

The reason for the suspension of the 20,000mAh battery project arises out of concerns for stability. As a result of the testing, the prominent 12,000mAh battery was shown to experience swelling by mechanics. While the charging test was conducted at a 100W charging rate, the height of the cell had a dramatic increase from 6.3mm to 8.2mm. Obviously, the swelling creates a problematic issue of safety and the battery pack’s thickness, measuring 14mm, being too much for contemporary smartphones. The strategy to emphasize the safety of the battery and yield was to aim for batteries in the range of 6,000mAh to 8,000mAh.

The Future of Xiaomi Batteries and Capacity

It is evident that we are at the onset of an era that will see batteries with higher capacities become the new norm for flagship models. Just five years ago, a battery of 3000mAh capacity was what all Android manufacturers aspired to have. Currently, anything below 5,000mAh is viewed as substandard by consumers.

This new battery technology developed by Samsung SDI is an indication that firms such as Xiaomi will soon capitalize on such advancements. With the maturity of this technology, we believe there will be substantial improvements in the forthcoming Xiaomi phones. We have expectations that the forthcoming models such as the Xiaomi 17T series (which comes from the Redmi K90 Ultra) will have batteries close to the 9,000mAh capacity. This will provide an outstanding battery life without in any way compromising the design of the phone. The aspect of optimizing a single cell instead of a multi-cell design will see improvements in the energy density
