POCO X7 launched: What did Xiaomi add over the POCO X6?

The POCO X7 has arrived as an upgrade over the POCO X6, packing in a number of notable upgrades while retaining the value-oriented approach the brand has become synonymous with. Let’s dive into a comprehensive comparison of these two devices to understand what’s changed and whether the upgrade is worth considering.

Price Positioning

POCO X7 becomes much more advantageous than POCO X6 with its new pricing.

  • 8+256 GB $249
    • Early-bird $229
  • 12+512 GB $299
    • Early-bird $269

Here are the current prices for the POCO X6:

  • Global: $230.00
  • Europe: €218.99

Performance Evolution

The POCO X7 finally gets an important performance boost from the main Dimensity 7300-Ultra processor reaching an AnTuTu score of 704,404, far up against the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 on the X6 with a v10 AnTuTu score of 605,803. But for that raw generational leap ahead in addition to being leaps and bounds above in efficiency terms, there is obviously the improved manufacturing process of the new chipset put in place.

Particularly, the Mali-G615 GPU in the X7 outperforms its predecessor’s Adreno 710 in the X6 in that area of gaming; this further goes down to the most resource-intense games and graphically intensive applications where the frame rate and overall stability maintain the lead.

Display Technology Advancement

The POCO X7 makes marked strides in terms of display technologies:

  • Peak brightness: 3000 nits X7; X6 is capped at 1800 nits
  • Touch sampling: 2560Hz (X7) vs standard rate (X6)
  • Protection: Gorilla Glass Victus 2 (X7), Gorilla Glass Victus

The features of both devices are partially similar:

  • AMOLED panel, 6.67-inches
  • 120Hz refresh rate HDR10+ support

Camera

Xiaomi dropped the camera megapixel on the POCO X7, but added a much better camera sensor and aperture.

  • X7: 50MP Sony IMX882 with OIS, f/1.5
  • X6: 64MP with OIS, f/1.8

Both gadgets feature the following:

  • 8MP ultra-wide camera
  • 2MP macro sensor

Front Camera

  • X7: 20MP wide-angle
  • X6: 16MP, f/2.5

Battery and Charging

The charging capabilities show interesting differences. While the X7 has a bit bigger battery, the X6 actually supports faster charging. X7 compensates this with improved longevity of its battery: up to 1,600 charge cycles with 80 percent capacity are supported.

  • X7: 5110mAh, 45W charging
  • X6: 5100mAh, 67W charging

Build Quality and Design

What truly sets the X7 apart is its superior IP68 water and dust resistance rating, a significant upgrade from the X6’s IP54 certification.

  • X7: IP68 Dust and Water Proof
  • X6: IP 54 protection against splash water

Additional Features

Both devices have:

  • In-display fingerprint sensor
  • Dual speakers
  • NFC (region dependent)
  • IR blaster

The X6 still retains a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is getting increasingly rare in modern smartphones. But POCO X7 don’t have.

Who Should Choose Which?

Actually, buying a phone that’s a generation older doesn’t make much sense, but for the $30 price difference, you might want to buy the POCO X6 instead of the POCO X7.

Choose the X7 if you want:

  • Higher performance and efficiency
  • Superior water resistance: IP68
  • Brighter peak brightness
  • Better selfie camera
  • More durable display protection
  • Low-temperature operation enhanced

Choose the X6 if you prefer:

  • More affordable price point because it’s old device
  • Faster charging speeds (not huge different between 45W and 67W)
  • 3.5mm headphone jack

Conclusion

The POCO X7 is more of a meaningful upgrade from the X6 in many areas, most importantly in performance, display brightness, and durability. At the same time, though, the X6 should be and still is a good option at its price point, carrying many features over while having some advantages like faster charging and including a headphone jack. The X7 is more future-proof, at least, with the better processor and improved durability for users migrating from older devices. Still, anyone already invested in an X6 can skip this generation unless higher brightness or improved water resistance is worth paying for.
