Most apps can no longer be installed on Xiaomi phones

The Golden Label Alliance, commonly known as the Mobile Smart Terminal Ecological Alliance, has just enforced a critical policy affecting both Android developers and users alike. This move, targeted by alliance members OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi, is at smoothing application compatibility and/or performance for the removal of support for all apps that are only 32-bit architecture from their respective application stores. This policy change takes immediate effect as of September 2, 2024.

A Push Towards 64-Bit Adaptation

This is informed by its commitment to the improvement of Android users’ experiences. Thus, this alliance focuses on 64-bit architecture so as to ensure that in the end, safer, more efficient, and higher-quality services are delivered to the end users. This transformative shift will definitely drive a sea change in the performance of applications, offering faster processing speeds and sportive measures necessary for security.

Developers are therefore encouraged to migrate their applications to support 64-bit architecture as soon as possible, so their apps would keep working normally and be available in stores. It moves them along with the general trend within the whole industry toward 64-bit computing, which allows it to use memory and processing power much more effectively-in fact, this is translating into a smoother user experience.

Current Status of Adaptation

By 23rd August 2024, the adaptation rate to 64-bit for OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, and Lenovo software stores has been as high as over 99.29%. Of course, even at that high percentage, there are still more than 4,000 key applications that have not transitioned their architecture to 64-bit. Notably, 99% of those nonadapted applications are currently not available in app stores.

The alliance has also noticed a drop of more than 100 non-adapted applications compared to the number this time last month, signaling steady steps towards complete 64-bit adaptation. This progress underscores the industrywide push toward modernizing applications for compatibility with new hardware and software advances.

Following in Google’s Footsteps

The move is not an isolated case for Golden Label Alliance in the tech world. Indeed, Google set the trend for this move when it stopped issuing support for the 32-bit applications upon the release of the Pixel 7 Pro. As we reported in April 2023, that moment set by Google marked an important milestone for a mobile industry in transition toward 64-bit architecture.

By removing the support for 32-bit apps, Google had the goal of tidying up its app ecosystem to make way for more efficient and more secure applications.

Implications for Developers and Users

It is an important notice for the developers in which they need to upgrade their applications according to newer requirements; otherwise, it could result in the removal of that app from the app stores, and they would lose access to millions of users across the platforms of the alliance. What this migration will mean to users is a far more fluent and more functional set of application ecosystems. With the emphasis on 64-bit applications, users will see better performance, improved security features, and an overall better experience on their devices.

This is a big step towards more improvements in the Android ecosystem by the Golden Label Alliance. It follows Google, in this regard, embracing the future of 64-bit computing, which guarantees solid and efficient levels of the technology standard. From here on, it is expected that developers will adapt to these now changes quickly while assuring their apps are still applicable and accessible to users. In return, users will be able to enjoy a high-quality and more consistent environment across various applications on OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, and Lenovo devices.

What this means for users is possibly losing access to their owned software just like Apple did, because some developers don’t exist anymore and those apps will never get updated, at least on android we have sideloading and the majority of apps have apks on the internet but there will probably be some stuff that has never been preserved and this could mean that those apps will become lost media one day if this ends up being enforced for all apps on the google play store in general.

I really wish this would just be said apps getting unlisted or delisted from the app stores until they get updated to 64-bit but not completely removed (and thus making it impossible to redownload and preserve). I know it’s not a big of a deal as what happened with Apple and that this is a decade later but still…
