ChatGPT voice is now supported as the default assistant on Android. The battle between AI assistants is heating up with the recent move by OpenAI. The newest beta version of ChatGPT on Android now has the ability to set ChatGPT’s intelligent voice as the default assistant with an alternative to Google’s Gemini. ChatGPT’s voice experience is preferred as being more natural and closer to humans by many users over others, and hence it is a wonderful addition to the Android ecosystem.
ChatGPT vs. Gemini: The Assistant Showdown
While Google Assistant has been gradually being replaced by Gemini (Google is phasing out the latter), ChatGPT is filling the gap. ChatGPT’s voice capabilities have amazed users since its release, offering an experience that is surprisingly similar to talking to a living being. While Gemini Live offers similar features, however, users feel it is not quite up to par with OpenAI’s delivery when it comes to conversational flow and response.
How to set ChatGPT as your default Android assistant
Want to make ChatGPT your default voice assistant instead of Gemini? Here’s how you can do it:
- Join the ChatGPT beta program by visiting the beta sign-up link and clicking “Become a tester”
- Wait a few minutes until the update appears on Google Play, then upgrade the app.
- Open ChatGPT version 1.2025.070 after updating it and then click on your avatar in the bottom right.
- Proceed to “Voice” settings and enable the “Background conversations” setting
- Go back to the chat window and click on the wave icon in the text box.
- Let the voice load in full
- Press and hold the power button to open up the assistant selector and choose ChatGPT
If the assistant selector does not appear automatically:
- Go to Android settings and find “Default Apps” Look for “Assistance and Voice Input” settings
- Select ChatGPT as your online assistant
If ChatGPT is still not displayed as an option, you should uninstall and reinstall the app and then repeat the above steps.
User Experience and Constraints
Once you’ve set ChatGPT as your default assistant, you can bring it up by long-pressing the power button. You can ask questions, get information, or simply converse. It’s all logged in your ChatGPT conversation history to be used later. A big disadvantage is that ChatGPT is slower to start than Gemini or even Perplexity’s assistant. However, users believe the experience is well worth the wait.
This new integration is an important advancement in the creation of AI assistants on Android, offering users increased choice in how they interact with their device through voice.
Xiaomi is a Chinese company. Why on earth would they look for an American LLM in one of their devices?
You should use DS. Not because it’s Chinese, but because it’s clearly superior.
I have tried several times. Uninstalled and reinstalled the app but it is not displaying as an option.
