Xiaomi smartphones in worldwide markets, including in the EEA (the European Economic Area), will soon feature a new, updated user interface when Google launches a new, reworked Settings menu for its Phone app. In a similar aesthetic to Android 16, with its new looks, Google’s move will make its app easier to navigate and easier to comprehend, a move in keeping with Xiaomi’s quest to make its software experiences simple and efficient for its global base of users.
What’s New in the Google Phone App?
Latest teardowns of Google Phone app (v127.x) reveal a new menu layout for Settings with segmented UI in store for Android 16. Some of the key observations include:
- Increased Visibility: Individual menu items have a rectangular background colors, making touch targets easier to use.
- Dynamic Theming: The UI accommodates colors of wallpapers, providing compatibility for light and dark theme for uniform looks.
- Streamlined Navigation: Categorised headings and hierarchical organisation in an easier-to-view format allow for easier access to call settings, anti-spam, and caller ID options.
For Xiaomi, in particular, this update comes most relevant. Handsets including the Xiaomi 13 series, Redmi Note 13 series, and other EEA region worldwide variants rely on Google’s Phone app for dialer, offering a harmonious integration with Android’s environment.
How and Why It Applies to Xiaomi’s Universal Audience
Xiaomi long prioritized native Android experiences in countries like Europe, where Google’s native dialer takes over for MIUI’s native dialer. That careful selection comes with faster access to Google’s most updated improvements, and its future redesign is no exception:
- Enhanced User Experience: Simpler and cleaner UI reduces settings such as voice mail, spammers’ blocking, and record a call—all such universally utilized options for Xiaomi’s global users.
- Android 16 future-proofing: With soon-to-be-implemented Android 16 (reportedly re-branded as HyperOS 2.0), app level homogeneity with the OS’s language is assured with this update.
- Consistent UI in HyperOS 2’s Same Look and Feel: Google’s redesign is being emulated even in Xiaomi’s 2.0’s same grouped, segmented UI. With its synergy, it brings a uniformed UI between OS and app, reduces user learning, and maximizes Xiaomi’s theme of harmony in looks.
- Increased Accessibility: The segmented UI’s high contrast and larger target touches abide by Xiaomi’s accessible design principle, benefiting both visually and motor-impaired users.
When Can I Get the Update for Xiaomi Device?
While Google has yet to confirm a rollout timeline, the redesign is expected to debut with Android 16 later this year. Xiaomi’s track record of prompt OS updates in Europe suggests that flagship and mid-range devices in the EEA will be among the first to receive the revamped Phone app, either via Play Store updates or bundled with HyperOS upgrades.
A Strategic Win for Xiaomi’s Software Ecosystem
Utilising Google’s app breakthroughs, Xiaomi embeds its presence in competitive markets like Europe, where software refinement overhauls hardware specs. Implementing Android 16’s segmented UI in HyperOS 2.0 is a reflection of Xiaomi’s commitment to a single, unifying aesthetic, blending Google’s Material You tenets with its stripped-back ideology. Not only future-proofs its gadgets, but places the brand at the fore of embracing Android’s shifting design trends
Xiaomi’s future refinements of its Android 16 apps will mean deeper integration, including AI-powered call filtering and anti-spam, both of which have proven to be fan favorites in Pixel smartphones. With its HyperOS 2.0 following in these design improvements, Xiaomi will have a harmonious, visually coherent experience that unites software and hardware innovation. I like it
In Spain and many other EU and EEA countries it is completely legal to record your own calls, even without notice to the callers, but Google and Xiaomi have removed the recording functionality in the phone interface. This forces you to install modified ROMs, install external apps or buy devices in other countries. As soon as some brand launches phones that respect this legality I will get them.
