Bootloader unlocking comes to an end with Xiaomi HyperOS 2.0

Update: Xiaomi has updated the text of the app and announced that it will reopen in 2025.

Where Xiaomi is concerned, the big shift will happen when HyperOS 2.0 launches in October 2024. And of all user-facing changes, one of the most serious will be the new policy against unlocking bootloaders. Earlier, when HyperOS 1.0 launched, Xiaomi introduced a system where users could unlock their phone’s bootloader after taking a small quiz. However, with this update, that capability will be very much gone, hinting at a serious change in how Xiaomi devices would work in the future.

Final Bootloader Unlock Quiz September 9, 2024

The last date on which users can unlock the bootloader under this regime will fall on September 9, 2024, at 11:59 PM. After that, Xiaomi will not allow any more new requests to unlock the bootloader, a full month in front of the official release of HyperOS 2.0. That seems to seal, once and for all, whatever flexibility Xiaomi device users might have confronted with regard to device customization or root access.

What does this mean for Xiaomi users?

The bootloader lock will affect those users who actually like having absolute control over their devices. Users who root their phones quite often or flash custom ROMs will no longer be able to do such things, at least in the Chinese market. For the time being, there is no word if such changes will hit the global markets too; however, based on the general trend, this may go down the same way.

Why is Xiaomi locking the bootloader?

But it’s not Xiaomi alone that is making the move. The largest smartphone makers are gradually clamping down on security by disabling bootloader unlocking. That is highly driven by the desire to keep better control over the ecosystems of their devices for security and less unauthorized modification. While these steps might improve security and performance, it simultaneously restricts the freedom that many have valued.

Future of Unlocking Bootloader in 2025 and Beyond

Up until now, Xiaomi has not provided any information on how unlocking the bootloader would take place in 2025 and afterwards. On the other hand, the move to block the unlocking in HyperOS 2.0 does indicate that it could be permanent. While this is not certain with regard to what the future holds, for those users who rely on customizations by unlocking, perhaps alternative solutions should be sought or different devices altogether.

Will This Affect Global Markets?

Although such a change has been confirmed officialy for China so far, the question would then be whether Xiaomi will extend this policy to a global market. Considering the trend of other major manufacturers trending in the same direction, it is also possible that the global version of HyperOS 2.0 will come with a locked bootloader too. No official announcements have appeared for the global market as yet, though.

The coming days of HyperOS 2.0 signal the end of an era for those Xiaomi users who like tinkering with their devices. The rest of the users have little time left to unlock their bootloaders before the option disappears on the stroke of September 9, 2024. Follow updates on the latest news about HyperOS 2.0 and how it will influence the unlocking of the bootloaders to make informed decisions about your Xiaomi device.

El teléfono es de quien lo comprá o siguen Xiaomi siendo su dueño.
Los usuarios los hemos llevado dónde están.
También podemos irnos a cualquier otro sistema.
Tengo 15 años aquí si eso no cuenta .

Before everything Xiaomi phones must have ask password before switching off device should be given to all their device. It’s a basic security feature that should be given. Introduce AI features like rest of the company is doing.

The EU has to punish this! Not having Admin/Super User rights over a Device i bought is crazy… Its like OEMs trying to deny warranty over Hardware with funny Stickers (Removing old Paste or dust from Coolers eg. voids nothing). I am Happy with Samsung using Snapdragons and having Open Bootloaders with No hussle actually… Sorry Xiaomi but u lost me with HyperOS and the unlock Process!

    I am currently a Xiaomi 14 user.
If you disable the bootloader unlock, I see no reason to continue using the Xiaomi (android) brand, and I can switch to an iPhone after ten years with a quiet heart.

Is it China only? I don’t have to do a quiz for requesting unlock bootloader and the option still there on the Xiaomi Community app and I don’t see a warning about closing it down

Chinese Manufacturers speakung about “Security” is like the Pope talking about humanity…
If they won’t provide bootloader unlocking, i’m Sure the community will at least find exploits to “jailbreak” Android phones. It wouldn’t be the same and to create custom Kernels would become impossible, modifications won’t stop. If Security is made by human it can be broken by human. Also i wouldn’t by a Xiaomi device anymore, would move in to One+ or whatever and i think i wouldn’t be the only one. Xiaomi customer Service ist bullshit and their phones are average, no reason to use them anymore.

My last Xiaomi phone was a Redmi 5 Plus that only survived up until now because the custom ROM community was very active. With that said, I will never buy another Xiaomi again, mainly because of the bloated system, bad build quality, non-existent QA, and now because they won’t let us unlock the bootloader to leave behind their horrid OS.

I’m extremely disappointed to hear that Xiaomi is removing the ability to unlock bootloaders with the release of HyperOS 2.0. As a loyal user of Xiaomi devices, including my current Redmi 10 (2022), I value the flexibility and customization options that come with unlocking the bootloader.

I understand the security concerns, but I believe that users should have the freedom to modify their devices as they see fit. This change will likely push me to consider alternative devices that still offer this level of customization.

I’ll make sure to unlock my bootloader before the September 9th deadline, but I hope Xiaomi reconsiders this decision and finds a way to balance security with user freedom. #Xiaomi #Redmi10 #BootloaderUnlock

Stupid move by Xiaomi. Oh well I don’t mind. They even put ads in their system built apps so I wouldn’t be surprised if they lock bootloader’s and prevent turning off of their ads from their app. Greedy company that you really still have to watch bs after buying their products!

If Xiaomi will really close the bootloader unlock feature in future after Hyper OS 2.0 then one word from me, that is ok to not unlock the bootloader in future but hopefully they will providing us for customization on with every update which will come after hyperos 2.0, if Xiaomi will agree that or not. if not then better to don’t need to close the bootloader unlock feature for peoples,
