Contrary to the belief that Xiaomi’s iconic “Super Wallpaper” feature had been abandoned, development is still very much active. A new update has surfaced, revealing a significant under-the-hood overhaul: the application is now updating its integration with Google’s Filament rendering engine.
What is Google Filament?
For those unfamiliar with the technical side of Android graphics, Filament is a real-time physically based rendering (PBR) engine developed by Google. It is open-source, mobile-first, and designed to be incredibly lightweight and efficient.
By utilizing Filament, Xiaomi’s Super Wallpapers can achieve:
- Photorealistic Lighting: PBR mimics how light interacts with surfaces in the real world, making the textures of “Earth,” “Mars,” or “Geometry” look significantly more lifelike.
- Performance Efficiency: Filament is optimized for mobile processors, meaning smoother animations (60/90/120fps) with potentially lower battery consumption compared to older rendering methods.
- Vulkan Support: The update log specifically mentions “vulkan,” a low-overhead graphics API that allows the app to communicate more directly with the phone’s GPU, reducing lag and stutter.
Update Technical Details
The latest Alpha build brings interesting changes to the API targeting, likely to ensure broader compatibility across different Android versions within the HyperOS ecosystem. The rollout started with Moon Super Wallpaper.
