The item tracker segment has traditionally been dominated by Apple’s AirTag and Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag series, leaving Xiaomi fans wondering when they might finally get a dedicated offering in this segment. Months of speculation finally give way to hard evidence of a potential ‘Xiaomi Tag,’ courtesy of deep dive findings in system code.
Renowned tech leaker Kacper Skrzypek spotted signs of the new tracker inside Xiaomi HyperOS. It confirms that Xiaomi is not just testing the waters but is ready to launch a strong device with features comparable to the very best in the business, offering different connectivity variants to fit different budgets.
TL;DR
- Two Versions: The tracker will come in a premium UWB (Ultra-Wideband) variant and a standard Bluetooth-only version.
- User-Friendly Power: Both models will be powered by a user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery.
- Seamless Pairing: Code snippets suggest an “AirTag-like” setup where you simply peel a sticker and hold the tag near your phone.
- Design: It is expected to visually resemble the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2.
A Closer Look at the Specs
Based on the information provided by Kacper Skrzypek on X, Xiaomi’s new tag is intended to integrate well with the ecosystem. It is expected to be released in mainland China first, as Xiaomi usually does with their IoT devices.
The most exciting part of this news is that there are two different versions of this device! The more exciting of these two is the “UWB version,” which will give us a precise location of where to find what has been lost by providing us with a clear view of the direction and location of what has been misplaced. The less expensive “Bluetooth version” will only give us a sense of where to look based on signal strength. They both require a “CR2032 battery,” which is a major plus in terms of longevity and ease of replacement compared to rechargeable batteries!
How Simple is the Pairing Process?
There is the worry of new ecosystem gadgets being complicated to set up, but Xiaomi has got this just right. There is information hidden in the strings of the HyperOS code that shows just how easy the setup is.
The code actually indicates the following: “Peel off the label at the bottom of your Xiaomi Tag and hold it close to your phone.” This indicates that the tag is in “shipping mode” so that the battery does not drain before it is used. Once the tag has been activated, the user can expect the following notifications: “Xiaomi Tag detected” – the user can then instantly add the tag to the “Find This Device” network.
Privacy and “Trust” Features
Privacy is a huge concern with trackers, and that’s something that Xiaomi is tackling directly. There is a feature that the leak reveals, which is called “‘Trust this Xiaomi Tag.'”
It seems like this feature helps prevent unwanted tracking alerts. For example, if you’re traveling with a friend who has a Xiaomi tag, you may get an “unknown tracker” notification on your phone. However, if you mark the tag as “trusted,” you won’t get those unwanted tracking alerts.
