“It seems somewhat alarming to look at the projections for next year,” stated Ma Zhiyu, the Product Marketing Director at Chinese brand Xiaomi. This concern is in the wake of another report that broke out just a fortnight ago in the Korea Economy Daily. As per the report, Korean memory makers Samsung and SK Hynix have decided to raise prices of their DRAM and NAND flash memory products up to 30% in Q4 of 2025.
As is quoted in the official post made by Ma Zhiyu himself:
“Just got a look at the recent cost projections for next year, and it’s a little disconcerting. Yeah. It’s related to this Singles’ Day. If we can take advantage of national subsidies, we should take it while we can.”
This is a serious indicator that memory components will soon see a rise in price. This can potentially target not only smartphones but also PCs, which mainly consist of memory chips.
Entire Industry Fallout & Xiaomi’s First-Stage Warning
Ma Zhiyu stated that “all products with storage components will be affected,” but it is “the PC market that will be affected to a greater extent because they require larger memory capacity.” This is in line with the increasing concern among global manufacturers with regard to the semiconductor supply chain.
Adding to this, REDMI Product Manager Suncun also indicated such difficulties in the near future. Recently, she announced a price cut of ¥300 (around 42 USD) for the REDMI K90 (12GB + 512GB) variant during its first sale itself, admits that it could be the last chance to avail such cuts.
In her second comment, she stated:
“But we can’t change the trend of the global supply chain. The rise in storage costs is much higher than we expected. But we hope this gesture can show our sincerity.”
What It Means for Consumers
Some users aired their concerns in the comments section with regard to the affordability of “512GB variants of smartphones” soon. To address their concern, Suncun stated:
“Prices will rise next year. Futures and material costs we’ve already seen are all going up significantly and will only be higher than now.”
This means that “the prices of smartphones in 2025 may see a rise, particularly for those with high storage capacity.” It is expected that it will be cheaper to buy new smartphones during “Singles’ Day sales or upcoming offers” as there will be price increases in 2025.
