Xiaomi unveils millimeter-accurate GPS: Say goodbye to standard location

MediaTek, in partnership with China Telecom and Xiaomi, has officially announced a groundbreaking upgrade to RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) high-precision positioning technology, as revealed through MediaTek’s official Weibo post on October 20. This joint development marks a significant leap in positioning accuracy and real-time responsiveness, integrating the power of 5G connectivity, advanced chip design, and Xiaomi’s smart ecosystem.

What Makes the New RTK Upgrade So Important

The newly upgraded RTK system enables outdoor positioning with sub-meter accuracy and second-level response times, one of the world’s quickest and most accurate public applications of its kind. Leverage the 5G network infrastructure, smart data transmission, and close chipset-mobile software coordination, the system could be widely implemented on smart city infrastructureautonomous driving, and smart transportation.

This partnership is a testament to the growing role of Xiaomi beyond smartphones — focusing on urban development and smart mobility technologies, solidifying its ecosystem under the Xiaomi HyperConnect banner.

How RTK Technology Works

RTK, an acronym for Real-Time Kinematic, is one of the most accurate positioning techniques based on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). RTK technique operates based on using carrier phase differential observation between a base station and a mobile receiver to calculate accurate positioning. Conventional GPS cannot provide such an accuracy at the centimeter level in real time, making it less suitable for applications such as autonomous vehicles, drones, and industrial robots.

The improved collaboration between MediaTek’s cutting-edge chipsets, China Telecom’s network, and Xiaomi’s hardware-software ecosystem enables an optimized RTK performance model that can potentially redefine how smart devices interact in real-world environments.

Future Outlook

This technology breakthrough is more than merely an upgrade in performance — it signifies the fusion of communication, computation, and mobility technologies. As Xiaomi keeps driving further into smart ecosystems and interconnected devices, such advancements might soon find their way to more sophisticated navigation systems and next-gen IoT solutions.
