Apple iPhone Fold reveals Xiaomi already leads foldable race

Details about Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone just leaked, and the market’s response is mixed—mainly because the projected launch date is all the way in 2026. In contrast, Xiaomi has been shipping foldable devices since 2021 and continues to refine its offerings with every new model. While Apple grapples with the fundamentals—like addressing screen creases and updating authentication methods—Xiaomi is already deploying these solutions at scale.

The leaked information points to some surprising decisions from Apple. Instead of Face ID, Apple’s planning to use Touch ID for biometric authentication on the foldable. In addition, Apple’s move to in-cell display tech for crease reduction is nothing new; Xiaomi’s Mix Fold line has already set the standard here and continues to improve with each generation. In short, Apple is still drawing up plans, while Xiaomi is already delivering.

Apple’s Delayed Entry Highlights Xiaomi’s Lead

A 2026 release for the iPhone Fold underscores how far behind Apple is in the foldable race. While Apple’s engineers focus on basic crease reduction, Xiaomi has released several generations of foldables, each iteration enhancing durability and user experience.

Apple’s switch from on-cell to in-cell display technology is a design update, but Xiaomi’s team addressed these issues long ago through innovations in hinge design and advanced screen materials. Apple is just now approaching challenges Xiaomi already solved.

Biometric Authentication: A Missed Opportunity

Apple’s choice to revert to Touch ID for its foldable device signals a step back from the industry’s push toward seamless biometric authentication. Xiaomi, on the other hand, continues to enhance user convenience with side-mounted fingerprint sensors, robust face recognition, and multiple authentication options. These solutions ensure secure, flexible, and modern user access.

Global Connectivity: Xiaomi Remains Flexible

Apple’s decision to remove physical SIM card slots in favor of eSIM-only connectivity could limit the device’s appeal, particularly for international travelers and in markets where eSIM infrastructure is still developing. Xiaomi preserves user flexibility by maintaining both eSIM and physical SIM options, ensuring global compatibility and fewer headaches for end users.

Xiaomi’s Ongoing Leadership in Foldable Innovation

Xiaomi’s early and ongoing investment in foldable technology is paying dividends. The Mix Fold series stands out for its superior hinge durability, optimized software, and competitive pricing—making advanced foldable devices accessible to a wider audience.

For professionals and consumers seeking cutting-edge foldable technology today, Xiaomi delivers mature products and even offers added customization through tools like the MemeOS Enhancer app, available on the Play Store.

While Apple’s entry is highly anticipated, it’s clear the innovation gap is widening—and Xiaomi remains the brand to watch in the foldable space.

Man as much as I don’t like Apple I can’t really agree with you they have a leadership over smartphone and somewhat in innovation

I know their last innovation is just garbage but just look at how their software is optimize, how with that little of RAM (for today’s standard) they managed to make everything work just open you eyes man no one is perfect but just look at how everyone does it compare to other, Xiaomi is still under development, their HyperOS software is not really stable, their optimisation is substantial, their animation is great but just as great as all other company out there, their battery life is just mediocre almost like garbage because their battery optimisation so poor compare to everyone
