Xiaomi is once again making waves in the tech world with an impactful emotional message that is leaving fans abuzz with anticipation. This morning, several official Xiaomi accounts, namely Xiaomi, Xiaomi Mobile, and Xiaomi Auto, posted in tandem a hauntingly beautiful video of ocean waves with just the simple yet meaningful words “Thank you everyone” as its caption. This nostalgic image is directly inspired by the original Xiaomi Surge chip launch poster in 2017 and is an indication that after an eight-year wait, Xiaomi is set to premiere its next-gen internally developed chip – the
Xiaomi’s Chip Dreams Come Back
Xiaomi’s first foray into the extremely competitive semiconductor industry came in 2017 in the form of the original Surge S1 mobile chip. Used solely in Xiaomi’s 5c phone, the Surge S1 made a bold declaration on behalf of the company about its technological ambitions. Never did Xiaomi resume production of the Surge line in later phones despite this auspicious start.
Today, eight years after announcing its chip design program, Xiaomi is resuscitating its program under its new “XRING” label. This move is a perfect fit for Xiaomi’s wider strategy to gain more control over its own supply chain and build a more integrated hardware system.
Performance and Technical Specifications
The first-generation Surge S1 utilized an 8-core 64-bit processor with a 28nm process and 2.2GHz top speed. The chip utilized a big.LITTLE design and contained a Mali T860 quad-core GPU and a 32-bit voice DSP.
Early benchmarks for the soon-to-be-released XRING O1 show remarkable technological progress. The Geekbench scores show that its latest chip is said to have a high 10-core CPU capable of hitting an impressive 3.9GHz maximum frequency. Perhaps most significantly, its reported performance scores beat those even of Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip – putting Xiaomi among the leading chipset companies in the smartphone world.
What This Means for Xiaomi Users
To Xiaomi fans, Xiaomi’s creation of the XRING O1 chip is about more than mere technical breakthrough – it’s an indication of its vertical integration and independent R&D ambitions. If the chip is a success in practice, Xiaomi customers might see even more optimal hardware-software integration and therefore get enhanced performance, battery life and unique features.
