Xiaomi 14 Ultra to receive Dolby Vision support shortly

Xiaomi’s photography department is set to bring a major upgrade to the already stellar Xiaomi 14 Ultra photography experience. In a posting from Xiaomi product manager Bao, the work of integrating full-focal-length Dolby Vision capabilities into the flagship handset has been finalized and is now in the process of being certified by Dolby. This much-anticipated feature will extend the Dolby Vision support to all three of the handset’s main lenses to further establish the 14 Ultra among the most powerful camera phones in production. The feature should roll out to users in mid- to late May, assuming certification from Dolby is successful.

Improved Dolby Vision Across Multiple Lenses

The fresh update introduces support for Dolby Vision to all primary focal ranges of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s multi-camera setup. These include

  • Ultra-wide-angle 0.5x lens
  • Telephoto lens with 3.2
  • Ultra telephoto 5x lens

This broad implementation ensures that users may record exceptional HDR video material regardless of what lens is being employed. This required intense development to guarantee that there is uniform quality at all lens positions, which is part of the reason behind seeking official Dolby approval prior to release.

Bao also responded to some of the users’ concerns in the comments section of his announcement. On the green colour tint issue that some users had been experiencing with Dolby Vision on earlier devices, he stated that “We do have optimized the green colour issue” in this implementation. Further, upon being asked about third-party app support, he stated that the videos would be automatically converted to SDR format upon being shared to applications that do not support Dolby Vision.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra: A Photography Powerhouse

Xiaomi 14 Ultra, launched in February 2024, boasts one of the most developed camera systems in the smartphone market. The quad-camera design boasts the following

  • 50MP Sony LYT-900 main camera (1-inch sensor with variable f/1.63-f/4.0 aperture)
  • 50MP Sony IMX858 ultra-wide angle (f/1.8)
  • 50MP Sony IMX858 portrait telephoto (3.2X, f/1.8)
  • 50MP Sony IMX858 periscope telephoto (5X, f/2.5)

All of the lenses come equipped with Leica Summilux optics with ALD ultra-low-reflection coating in the main and ultra-wide cameras. Power is provided by Xiaomi Image Brain 3.0 (Xiaomi AISP) and UltraZoom AI enhancement is supported for over 30x zoom levels.

The soon-to-be-launched Dolby Vision upgrade will further boost the device’s currently impressive video performance, which encompasses full-focal-length 8K video recording. This enhancement is a testament to Xiaomi’s dedication to always improving the user experience via software upgrades even long after a device has been launched.
