Xiaomi releases April security patch ahead of schedule

In an unexpected turn of events reflecting Xiaomi’s increasing focus on device security and software support, the brand has started pushing out its April 2025 security patch earlier than scheduled, and its budget-smart Redmi 12 series is its initial beneficiary. This premature deployment of the security patch is an extension of Xiaomi’s recent strategy for developing its HyperOS 2, which brought improvements in update cycles for its overall portfolio of devices. Security-focused consumers can now benefit from better system protection without having to wait for its usual mid-month drop, which is widely adhered to by other manufacturers.

Update Details and Availability

The update is in version OS2.0.5.0.VMXMIXM for global Redmi 12 owners, and it bumps the Android version of the device to 15. This build is presently marked as a “Mi Pilot Release,” which means Xiaomi is rolling it out in phases first in an effort to guarantee stability prior to its wider availability.

The update package is mostly aimed at system security upgrades and not feature introductions. Based on its official changelog, the update’s sole purpose is to implement the April 2025 security patch, which fixes different system weaknesses found over recent months.

What Security Patches Mean For Your Device

Although security update releases do not bring new, flashy features, they do serve an essential purpose in upholding device integrity and securing user information. Monthly patches often fix:

  • Recently discovered operating system vulnerabilities
  • Protecting against new and evolving malware threats
  • Fixes for possible exploit paths for compromising personal data
  • System-level optimizations for improved security handling

The consistent provision of security patches reflects Xiaomi’s serious dedication to device longevity and consumer protection, especially impressive for a budget phone such as the Redmi 12.

When Will Other Devices See The Update?

Following Xiaomi’s usual pattern of rollouts, we should see the April 2025 security patch released for other devices in the following sequence:

  • Current flagships (Xiaomi 15 series) in the next week
  • Previous-Generation Flagships (Xiaomi 14 lineup) just shortly after
  • Mid-range devices (Redmi Note series) within the next 2-3 weeks
  • Devices still eligible by mid-to-late April

The Mi Pilot program enables enthusiastic users to get earlier updates, allowing Xiaomi to detect software issues in advance of its mass release. You can apply for joining Mi Pilot through the Settings application in compatible devices should you want to get early updates.

My Xiaomi 14 Ultra is still running HyperOS 1 and the November 24 security patch.

Xiaomi Support just continue to tell me to be patient.

I think there is something wrong. They will not admit this to me.

This is my first Xiaomi phone (paid €1500 cash for it……..it wasn’t a network subsidised phone)……it will certainly be my last Xiaomi.

There is no reason why my flagship device shouldn’t be on the March ’25 security patch.
