Xiaomi removes AI Portrait feature from HyperOS

Xiaomi has officially announced that the “AI Portrait” feature will be discontinued for global users, making it an exclusive function available only in China. The feature, which allows users to generate high-quality portrait images using AI, will gradually go offline starting April 1st.

Affected users are advised to save their AI-generated portraits before the removal process is completed. This move aligns with Xiaomi’s broader strategy of tailoring AI functionalities to regional markets, similar to how some Xiaomi HyperOS features remain exclusive to China.

AI Portrait Feature to Be Discontinued for Global Users

In an official notice, Xiaomi confirmed that the AI Portrait function in the “Gallery” app will be phased out. Users will no longer be able to access AI Portrait under “Gallery” > “Photos” > “More.” However, any previously saved portraits will remain unaffected.

Key Details About the AI Portrait Removal

The feature will go offline starting April 1st, 2025 for these devices.

  • Xiaomi 14 Ultra
  • Xiaomi 14
  • Xiaomi 14T Pro
  • Xiaomi 14T
  • Xiaomi MIX Flip
  • Xiaomi Civi 4 Pro (India)
  • POCO F6 Pro
  • POCO F6

Xiaomi assures users that once the feature is completely removed, all related data will be permanently deleted.

Why Is Xiaomi Removing AI Portrait for Global Users?

While Xiaomi has not explicitly stated the reason for this decision, it is likely related to privacy regulations, localization strategies, and cloud processing limitations outside China. AI-driven portrait generation often requires cloud computing, which may involve additional compliance requirements in different regions. This shift is similar to how Xiaomi restricts some AI-powered features to Chinese users while offering alternative enhancements for global markets.

What’s Next for AI Features on Xiaomi Devices?

Despite the removal of AI Portrait, Xiaomi is actively working on expanding its AI ecosystem. The recent Xiaomi AI Treasure Box 1.0.3 beta introduced support for DeepSeek-R1, enabling offline AI functionalities, including copywriting, real-time queries, and creative assistance. This suggests that Xiaomi may focus on device-based AI models to minimize reliance on cloud-based services. Check out more on AI advancements in Xiaomi.

The decision to discontinue AI Portrait for global users may be disappointing for many Xiaomi fans, especially those who enjoyed the feature’s creative potential. However, Xiaomi’s commitment to AI-driven innovation remains strong, with future updates expected to bring even more advanced on-device AI capabilities. If you haven’t saved your AI-generated portraits yet, be sure to do so before April 1st!
