It’s one of those frustrations that every Xiaomi user is familiar with: you hear about an update being released for your device, and when you go to check, it’s still not there. Why does this happen, and why do some Xiaomi users get updates sooner than others? The reason lies in the region-specific update rollout approach of Xiaomi.
Xiaomi’s Region-Based Update System
Xiaomi adopts a gradual software update approach, seeding them in different regions in a staggered manner. The main rollout regions for the brand are:
- China
- Global
- EEA
- India
After the initial release, the updates are deployed in the following regions:
- Russia
- Indonesia
- Turkey
- Taiwan
This tiered approach allows Xiaomi to monitor the update’s stability and iron out any critical bugs before rolling it out to all regions. While this ensures that, in the long term, a better user experience is guaranteed, it usually means some regions get the update later than others.
Why Does Xiaomi Adopt This Rollout Strategy?
- Bug Monitoring and Stability: Staged rollouts also give Xiaomi the ability to track potential issues in real-world scenarios. If any major bugs or compatibility issues arise, they can pause the rollout and address the problems before expanding the update to other regions.
- Regulatory Compliance Different regions have different regulations concerning software, and that is some of the things Xiaomi needs to consider by updating to make it suitable for local law.
- Regional Optimizations Xiaomi develops software for specific regions where its phones are sold. An India ROM, for example, may apply local features or apps, while an EEA ROM would include that many more strict privacy- and security-related regulations stipulated by the European Union.
- Server Load Management: This can overwhelm the servers of Xiaomi if they try to update millions of devices at once. Thus, a phased rollout always keeps the servers stable enough to deliver updates smoothly.
How to Check for Updates
If you’re waiting on an update, here’s what you can do to be ready when it does pop up:
- Verify Your Device’s Region Settings > About Phone > MIUI Version/HyperOS Version. You will see where the device is sold, region – such as Global, EEA, India.
- Check for Updates Manually: Settings > About Phone > System Update, then tap Check for Updates.
- Employ Official Xiaomi Tools: Impatient users can sometimes manually install updates using Xiaomi’s Mi Flash Tool and other utilities, but that requires some caution to avoid installing the wrong firmware.
Any speed improvements with regard to the updating of processes?
If you’re eager to get the latest update, you can consider these options:
- Switch Your Region: Some users temporarily change their device region to one where the update has already been released. Sometimes, this will trick the system into delivering the update early, but this does not always happen and may not work with all updates.
- Unlock the Bootloader Power users might then try unlocking the bootloader on the device and flashing the update themselves. Note that the process might void warranties if done improperly and can “brick” the device altogether, rendering it useless.

The staggered update strategy that Xiaomi has adopted helps improve the user experience and maintains stability; however, it often delays the updates for users in certain regions. Though that is frustrating, it can be digested if the reason behind the rollout process is understood. If it is definitely not possible to wait any longer, then a consideration could be the usage of manual update methods-but exercise due caution. For the greater majority of users, their best approach is that they may remain patient as all region updates would eventually be accomplished once the updates had gone through some sort of comprehensive testing process.

Thank you for this. I wonder why, even on HyperOS 1, I was missing the magazine style lock screen?
I’m missing a third lock screen on HyperOS 2. I’m using Redmi Note 13 4G from Nairobi Kenya.
